Beard Oil & Beard Wax: Friends or Enemies?

Beard Oil & Beard Wax: Friends or Enemies?

By: Beau Vuillemot • May 23, 2022

In the world of beard care, there is an ongoing discussion on beard oil and beard balm. Bearded individuals have been going back and forth on the merits of the two products. Some swear by the benefits of beard oil, while the rest have beard balm as their product of choice. So which side are you on? Whether you have picked a product between the two or remain undecided, here’s our take on the debate.

WHAT, WHEN, AND HOW

Beard Oil is in liquid form and is usually in a bottle with a dropper that also serves as a lid. Ideally, beard oil is applied right after a shower. After making sure your beard and the skin underneath it is dry, put 3 to 5 drops of beard oil on your palm and then massage from the facial hair down to the roots.

On the other hand, Beard balm is in wax form and is usually in a plastic or metallic circular container. Beard balm is also ideally applied after a bath or shower if you’re not using beard oil. To start, pat or blow-dry your beard, put 1 to 3 pea-sized amounts of wax (depending on your beard length) on your palm, rub your hands together, and then finish the process by applying to the beard and skin underneath.

SIMILARITIES

Both Beard Oil and Beard Balm are good products to nourish and condition your dry and brittle beard. This fact is especially true for those with long and thick beards because as facial hair grows, it becomes more difficult for the glands to produce enough sebum to moisten the base and, in turn, the beard. Also, both products are helpful in moisturizing and softening your skin underneath, lessening the chance of skin irritation and beard dandruff.

WHICH PRODUCT TO USE WHEN

The right question isn’t which product is better than the other; it’s what product is best to use when. If you’re starting to grow your beard, it’s best to use beard oil. Perhaps, you can try our 3-pack Beard Oil, so you can experience a variety of exotic scents. Our essential oils will combat the itchiness and dryness during this stage of beard growth. But if your beard is already at your preferred length, beard balm is the product to use as it will mold and shape your beard better compared to its liquid counterpart. If you’re on the lookout for one, we suggest you try our best selling Beard Balms, now in four fantastic scents.

BETTER TOGETHER?

There are varying opinions on whether beard oil and beard balm should be used together or one after the other. Here’s our take: it depends. It depends on the condition of your beard, its length, the weather you’re in, among other variables. For example, if you have a long and thick beard and it's dry as it can be and you’re in freezing weather, you’ll need all the help you can get! If you’re going to use both products, apply the beard oil first as it makes for a better base, followed by the beard balm as it locks in all the moisture and oil.
